The organizational model nowadays is similar to the industrial age, it is founded on centralization to achieve economies of scale through mass production. The technologies of the industrial age favoured the centralization of production within closed hierarchical organizations in all kind of organizations such as manufacturing, transport systems, education, and media.
The combination of telecommunication networks and computerized coordination enabled organizations to replace centralized management within closed hierarchies with open networks. As the underlying technology matured, we were able to convert more and more systems that were previously closed and centralized and have them managed through automated networks like eBay, Uber, Alibaba, or social networks. However, these platforms are still dependent upon the centralized organization to manage the shared database, the computing infrastructure, and the algorithms to be able to enable trust within the network.
Today, through blockchain technology we are witnessing the new decentralized business model. The difference between centralized organizations and distributed organizations that the first one enables trust, coordination and cooperation within organizations, but the second one promotes trust, coordination and collaboration among organizations and between individuals peer-to-peer. Having said that we could easily spot that many organizations are well structured internally and work efficiently. However, inter-organizational space is extremely inefficient.
Blockchain technology enables new forms of distributed organizations providing a shared trusted database between organizations. It has the potential to switch the dynamics within the economy and society from competition between closed, centralized organizations to collaboration between organizations and significantly strengthen work capacities across organizational boundaries. The result of this would be much more efficient overall societal and economic outcomes.
